Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about counting characters, letters and sentences.

Paste or type your text into the box above and the character count updates instantly, including a breakdown of characters with spaces, characters without spaces, and letters only. There's no need to count manually or copy your text into a separate word processor.
It depends on the context. Most platforms and forms that state a character limit count every character including spaces and punctuation. This tool shows both figures side by side: characters with spaces and characters without spaces, since some limits (rare, but they exist) only count non-space characters.
Character count includes every character in your text: letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and symbols. Letter count includes only alphabetic letters (A-Z), excluding numbers, spaces and punctuation entirely. If your text is "2 cats!", the character count is 7 but the letter count is 4 (c-a-t-s).
Microsoft Word shows a word and character count at the bottom of the screen, or under Review > Word Count, but it requires opening the file. Pasting your text into an online character counter is faster if you just need a quick count without opening the document.
This tool counts sentences by detecting terminal punctuation: periods, question marks and exclamation points. Abbreviations (like "Dr." or "e.g.") can occasionally be miscounted as sentence endings, which is a known limitation of any automated sentence counter, not just this one.
