Instagram Hashtag Strategy 2025: How Many Should You Use?
Instagram's own Creator team said in 2022 that using fewer, more relevant hashtags outperforms stuffing 30 generic ones. Two years on, the data consistently backs this up. Here's the optimal strategy for 2025.
The 30-Hashtag Era Is Over
For years, the advice was simple: use all 30 hashtags, mix large and small ones, and watch your reach grow. That strategy became less effective as Instagram's algorithm shifted toward interest-based distribution rather than hashtag-based distribution.
Instagram now explicitly recommends 3–5 highly relevant hashtags over 20–30 generic ones. Posts in niche topics can still benefit from 8–12 hashtags, but the days of 30-hashtag grids are largely behind us.
Recommended Hashtag Count by Account Size
| Account Size | Recommended Count | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1K followers | 8–12 | Niche-specific only — avoid mega tags |
| 1K–10K followers | 5–10 | Mix niche + community hashtags |
| 10K–100K followers | 3–8 | Hyper-relevant to content type |
| 100K+ followers | 2–5 | Brand hashtags + one or two niche tags |
Types of Hashtags to Use
- Niche hashtags (10K–200K posts): Best reach-to-competition ratio for most accounts
- Community hashtags (#FoodBlogger, #TravelCreator): Connects you to engaged communities
- Brand hashtags: Your own branded tag for UGC and brand building
- Location hashtags: Essential for local businesses and event content
Hashtags to Avoid
Avoid hashtags with over 50 million posts (your content disappears in seconds), banned hashtags (they suppress distribution), and irrelevant hashtags used purely for volume. Instagram's algorithm can now identify hashtag stuffing and may reduce distribution as a result.
Where to Put Hashtags in 2025
Three valid placements exist: at the end of your caption, in the first comment, or hidden after line breaks. None is dramatically superior for reach. First comment is the cleanest visually; end of caption is the simplest workflow. Choose consistency over cleverness.
