Amazon Backend Keywords: The 250-Byte Guide for Sellers

โœฆ Limitora ยท ๐Ÿ“– 5 min read ยท June 2025

Amazon backend search terms are invisible to shoppers but indexed by Amazon's A10 algorithm. Used correctly, they help your listing rank for keywords that don't fit naturally in your visible copy. Here's how to maximise all 250 bytes.

The 250-Byte Limit Explained

Amazon allows 250 bytes of backend search terms โ€” not characters. For standard ASCII characters (letters, numbers, spaces), one character equals one byte. For non-ASCII characters (accented letters, non-Latin scripts), one character can equal 2โ€“4 bytes. In practice, if you're writing in English, treat 250 bytes as 250 characters.

How to Find Backend Keywords

Use Amazon's auto-suggest (type your product into the search bar and note the dropdown suggestions), competitor ASIN reverse lookup tools (Helium 10, Jungle Scout), and your own listing's Search Term Reports if you run Sponsored Products ads โ€” the keywords that drive organic impressions there are excellent candidates.

Formatting Tips

Separate keywords with single spaces only โ€” no commas, no semicolons, no quotation marks. Single words and phrases both work: "gym bag waterproof large duffel sport travel weekender". Amazon's algorithm handles phrase matching, so you don't need to enter every possible phrase โ€” "waterproof gym bag" and "large gym bag" are both covered by "waterproof large gym bag".
